Helping Haiti

I realize that this is not my typical blog entry, but I wanted to let my readers know about a few different options for how to donate money to the relief effort in Haiti.

Samaritan's Purse
This is the organization that my husband and I chose to donate to. We wanted to give to a lesser known organization than the Red Cross that may not be receiving as much support. We were aware of Samaritan's Purse because every year, we participate in their Operation Christmas Child program, which delivers shoeboxes full of goodies to children who otherwise would not receive any gifts. (Our boxes went to Mexico this year!) You can check out what they are doing to help in Haiti after the earthquake.

The American Red Cross
Obviously, the Red Cross is a great organization to donate to, as well. You can donate on their website, or you can simply text "Haiti" to 90999 to make a $10 donation (the charge will show up on your next cell phone bill).

I'm sure there are many other wonderful organizations that are currently helping with the relief effort in Haiti, but these are the two that I am most familiar with. Feel free to leave a comment if you know of another great organization, and remember that every little bit helps!

If you don't mind opening a bunch of e-mails and clicking on links, then MyPoints.com is a great way to earn incentives. I joined back in November and I now have enough points for a $10 gift card to my choice of merchants. It's not a lot, but considering that it takes less than 30 seconds of my time to click on the links in their e-mails, it sure is easy. If you scroll down to the bottom of the e-mails, most will have an option to earn 5 points just by clicking. If you complete the offer or make a purchase, more points will be offered, but generally I just click and then close the window. Just make sure that under "Email Subscriptions" you check the box to receive BonusMail! If you also choose to receive SurveyMail, you will receive survey invitations as well. Most surveys are worth 50 points if you qualify, but even if you don't qualify you get 10 points just for trying. Also, they do have a Network program so you can invite friends and earn points when they join, but that requires e-mailing each friend directly. Try it out and see for yourself if this is something you might enjoy!

Wow, can you believe it's 2010 already? Seriously, where did 2009 go?

Every January 1, I contemplate making a resolution but never do because I know I won't stick to it. Now I don't know if this can be considered a resolution or not, but I do have a goal this year. I've been saving a lot of money using coupons but I have not turned those savings into anything tangible because I have not really been keeping track of how much I'm actually saving. So this year, my goal is to try and keep track of this and hopefully be able to put some real money into a savings account! I am going to try out the Excel Savings Tracker created over at The Coupon Project, so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully I can stick to it!
